The Write Space

January 19, 2017

It is 1999. A young (and fabulous) high schooler is experiencing her first brush with online flirting as she chats with a cute boy from school on AOL Instant Messenger (AIM for those of you in the know). She sits at her father's desk in the living room on the big, boxy, family computer. The desk smells like wood polish and rubber bands.

Flash forward 18 years and the very same desk sits in my guest bedroom. It smells a little old, stale maybe, like a home that has been shut up for some time, and lavender because of the candle I keep on the shelf.

This blast from my past is now becoming my own little writing space. It's a work in progress. I'm filling it with knick knacks and bric a brac and hundreds of pretty office supplies that I may never use but will enjoy looking at every day. I have a tape dispenser shaped like a dog and a watercolor train my mother-in-law painted. My father's nameplate from his office and headphones and notes from my kids clutter the surfaces. There is a fluffy chair and a Day of the Dead bobblehead doll from my 35th birthday. I can't forget the books and pictures and inspirational sayings. And coffee. I mean, sometimes what is left in the cup is a few hours old, but there is ALWAYS coffee.

It's amazing to me how much all of this makes a difference. Instead of wandering the house with my laptop looking for a little quiet, I head into my space. My own little writing space. And instantly I'm transported to a more productive, more creative, happier place.

Surroundings matter friends. So tell me about your write space. And if you don't have one, I strongly suggest you find a space, no matter how small, to carve out to be your very own. It matters.

xoxo,

Liz
